Meet Bro/Buddy
Buddy's story isn't about finding a home just yet - it's about learning that he's finally safe.
MEET BUDDY
Buddy is a gorgeous young Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross with a funny, affectionate personality and a heart that's still learning how to relax.
When Buddy arrived at Vada's, it quickly became clear that some of the behaviours we'd initially seen as overexcitement were actually signs of something much deeper.
Buddy struggles with significant anxiety, particularly around being separated from his people. When that panic takes over, settling himself becomes incredibly difficult.
So for now, Buddy's job isn't to find a family.
It's to learn how to feel safe.
LIFE WITH BUDDY
Buddy is currently living with us while we work through a structured rehabilitation programme designed around his individual needs.
Like many Staffy crosses, he's incredibly people-focused and loves being close to his humans. He's also shown us a lovely social side with carefully selected dogs and enjoys spending time with some of our calmer canine residents.
One of Buddy's biggest challenges is being separated from the people he trusts.
We're slowly teaching him that his crate can be a safe, predictable space rather than something to fear. He travels with us regularly and is learning that being safely crated in the car doesn't mean he's being abandoned - we're still right there.
At night, his crate currently sits beside the bed where he feels safest.
These might sound like small achievements, but for Buddy they're huge.
BUDDY'S REHABILITATION
Buddy's anxiety was significant enough that it was preventing him from being able to learn effectively.
Alongside routine, structure and positive training, Buddy is receiving veterinary-supported medication to help bring that overwhelming anxiety down to a level where he can process new experiences and learn.
The goal isn't to change who Buddy is.
It's to give that funny, affectionate boy underneath the anxiety the chance to come through.
We're not putting a deadline on his progress. Rehabilitation happens at the dog's pace, not ours, and Buddy may need many months before he's ready for his next chapter.
For now, we're celebrating the little wins.
A calmer car ride.
Settling a little faster.
Feeling comfortable in his crate.
Spending short periods apart without panicking.
Choosing to relax.
Every one of those moments is another step forward.
BUDDY'S FUTURE
There will eventually come a day when we're talking about the kind of forever home Buddy needs.
But today, we're simply helping him become the dog who'll be ready for it.
